The location: Colonia Independencia

The colony was founded in 1919 by winegrowers from Baden; settlers from Austria and Switzerland followed later. German-speaking structures still shape everyday life: a German school, German bakeries and butchers, clubs and church services. For families with children, the local school is often the decisive argument. The region lies in the highlands of the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú with numerous streams and waterfalls, including the well-known Salto Suizo. The elevation makes for a noticeably more pleasant climate than the lowlands. Villarrica, with hospital, specialists, university and shopping, is around 40 km away; Asunción about three hours by car.
