Colonia Independencia was founded in 1919 by winegrowers from Baden; settlers from Austria and Switzerland followed later. German-speaking structures still shape daily life today - and that is exactly what makes the place so easy for newcomers:

Geographically, the colony lies at the foot of the Cordillera del Ybytyruzú, the highest mountain range in eastern Paraguay. From here you can quickly reach crystal-clear streams for swimming, several waterfalls and, with the Salto Suizo, the highest waterfall in the country. The elevation makes for a noticeably more pleasant climate than the lowlands: the nights cool down and the summer heat is easier to bear.

Daily life is quiet and manageable. Crime levels are considerably lower than in the metropolitan areas, you know your neighbours, and the German-speaking community is well established and helpful. Hiking, riding, fishing, gardening, beekeeping - life here happens outdoors. Villarrica, with its hospital, specialists, university and larger shopping facilities, is around 40 km away; Asunción is about a three-hour drive.
